Cherries

General Information

Cherries are originally from Transcaucasia,  Asia Minor and Persia.  There are two types of Cherries:

  • Sweet Cherries: The dark red sweet Cherries are the kinds most often seen in the grocery store. Some sweet Cherries have yellowish flesh.  These cherries are used for maraschinos or canned fruit cocktails. Sweet Cherries are best eaten while fresh because they lose much of their delicate flavors when cooked.

  • Sour/Tart Cherries: Sour/Tart Cherries are rarely seen in stores. These Cherries are  used in jams, tarts, pies, etc., and are also known as Pie Cherry. If sour Cherries are left on the tree to ripen fully, they may also be enjoyed as sweet Cherries.
